HIRESIS Pheromone trap for monitoring drugstore beetles and carpet beetles
HIRESIS

The targets are flying insects frequently found in food and rice processing plants, museums including art museums, drugstores, warehouses, where they infest grains and their processed foods. Because of their cautious nature, these insects are hard to capture with ordinary traps. HIRESIS is a specialized trap designed for cautious insects, and is capable of efficient monitoring. The traps for the drugstore beetle are only available from FUJI FLAVOR in the world.

Target Insects

Drugstore beetle

Scientific name: Stegobium paniceum

Drugstore beetle

Adults are 2 to 3 mm long and are brown to very dark brown. Drugstore beetles resemble tobacco beetles, but the wing covers of the drugstore beetle have rows of dots giving them a clear striated appearance. Moreover, whereas the antennae of the tobacco beetle are saw like, the last three segments of antennae of the drugstore beetle are long and thick. Mainly the adults and larvae infest grains, confectioneries, spices, dried fruits, shiitake mushrooms, dried noodles including buckwheat noodles, and also Chinese medicine. Females lay around 80 eggs. They develop into adults in 45 to 60 days and life span is around 10 to 21 days. They have 1 generation a year in cold places and 3 generations a year in warm places.

Carpet beetle

Scientific name: Anthrenus verbasci

Carpet beetle

Adults are around 2.5 mm long and are brown to dark brown with various mixes of white, yellow, and brown scales. Mainly the larvae infest clothing, carpets, and other wool fabrics, as well as samples of flora and fauna in museums. They can also infest dried vegetable-based food (brown rice, wheat, and other grains) and dried animal-based food (dried fish, carcasses of insects and small animals). Adults like flower pollens and nectars, but are not particularly harmful to flowers. Females lay from 30 to 70 eggs.
